April Newsletter

Spring is here and landscapes all over Atlanta are showing off their spring blooming plant material.  We experienced another mild winter in 2017 and the heavy rainfall that occurred in the first week of April has helped replenish our soil moisture.  We are very excited the spring season is here and are doing everything we can to ensure your properties are looking great.

Azaleas, Dogwoods, Redbuds, Spireas, Viburnums, Forsythia, fiddleheads on Ferns and perennials have been outstanding this year. Fescue turf is gleaming right now and is receiving another blast of liquid fertilizer this month perfectly timed with the weather. By performing all of our turf fertilization and weed control treatments in-house we can control the timing of product application.  This delivers better results. Warm season turf is just now coming out of dormancy and is greening nicely. Let’s hope that weather doesn’t dip to below 33 degrees before the 15th of April. If so, we may see a delay of greening for another 3-4 weeks.

Granular fertilizers for shrubs will be completed this month and liquid rounds to follow through the summer months.

We are anticipating some heavier than normal disease and insect pressures this year from the mild winter that we just experienced. Managers and crews are on the lookout for Cercospora needle blight on conifers, Phomopsis blight on conifers, Volutella blight on Boxwoods and early insect population swings. We have had an early Aphid population and crews have been managing those very quickly. Tree and shrub injections are always the best preventative on susceptible plant species.

Poa annua and Poa trivialis continues to be the worst weed in fescue in the nation and has now continued its aggressive foothold in the Southeast. We are all anxiously anticipating for the scientists in the labs to help us all out with this grassy weed.

Crews are pruning on all properties right now, making thinning and corrective cuts and shaping shrubs for the continued onset of new leaf growth that the shrubs will develop over the next 6 months. Pruning is a top priority each week to ensure overall healthy plant material.

Installation of new outdoor entertaining areas combined with new turf, trees, and shrubs are the best way to create additional value to your properties.  Outdoor spaces such as fireplaces, fire pits outdoor patios are all the rage right now.  Contact us if you would like to be put in contact with one our 5 award winning Landscape Architects on staff who can help you with your design/build projects.

Look forward to more blooms out there coming from new Summer Annual Flower installations.  Our Seasonal Flower Designers have been busy all Winter designing new color combinations and new varieties of flowers for all your seasonal flower beds and containers.

Thank you so much for allowing us the privilege to service you and your properties.

Vice President

December Landscape News

Hope everyone has had a great year as we welcome in 2017.  December is a time to be with family and friends and to reflect on all the blessing we each have.  On behalf of everyone at Gibbs Landscape Company, we are so appreciative of the privilege provide landscape services for your properties.  We would also like to thank Atlanta voters for again voting for Gibbs Landscape Company as the 2016 Consumers’ Choice Award Winner.  Without our loyal clients we would not have been able to win this prestigious award of being the BEST in our category of landscape services.

This month the crews will continue to remove leaves and try to get everything clean and ready for pine straw or mulch applications. Pine straw and mulch are vital to your landscape plantings health.  Please make sure a fresh application of pine straw or mulch is applied to your property once leaves are finished falling and cleaned up.  We will be providing you with proposals for this service.  Mulch and pine straw help protect plant’s roots from cold and will enhance the look of your landscape. Pansies and Violas were off to a slow start with the warm weather but temps are now more desirable.  We will be installing tulips and daffodils this month.  Daffodils are a great bulb that will re bloom each year and are deer and squirrel resistant.  Our fescue turf will receive another round of nitrogen in January while warm season turf are going dormant.  We are finishing up a great pre emergent round on the warm season turf this month.   Dormant season pruning will begin soon.  We will be thinning and making corrective interior cuts and in some cases performing a heavier dormant prune where needed.  Heavier pruning will be discussed prior to commencement.

A note on some plant issues that are of growing concern of ours and the entire east coast.  Rose Rosette Virus on Knock Out Roses is being found in more and more landscapes.  There is no cure or real prevention of the virus.  We will alert you if we find Rose Rosette in your landscape and we can make a joint decision on rectification.

Our Landscape Architects are always here to meet with you and discuss that landscape renovation you have been dreaming of.  Let us help you make it a reality!  Remember…winter is the best time to plant in Atlanta.  The plants will focus on root establishment in the winter and you do not need to water them which saves you money.

All of us at Gibbs Landscape Company Wish You Happy Holidays and a Very Happy New Year!

3 Reasons to Build A Backyard Fire Pit

3 Reasons to Build A Backyard Fire Pit

Everyone loves to spend time outside with friends and family but as the temperature begins to dip no one wants to stand out in the freezing cold. Ever thought of adding a fire pit or outdoor fireplace to your landscape? Here are a few reasons why you should:

Property Values

A well-built fire pit and surrounding landscaping often increases property values considerably. If you plan on eventually selling your home, it will be worth much more if you have a developed and dedicated corner in your yard instead of a plain expanse of grass. An attractive fire pit area can add thousands to the value of your home, making it easier to sell because of the entertainment value of the area.

Extend the Season

If you like to entertain friends and family outdoors bundling up in warm clothes and sitting around a warm fire sipping cider is a nearly perfect way to enjoy a cool evening together. It will give you better use out of your impressively landscaped yard too.

Large Gatherings

If you’re partial to large family gatherings, a fire pit is the way to go. It’s tough to bring a group of people outside and place them around a barbecue grill or tiny portable fire pit. A dedicated outdoor pit is the ideal focal point for a large outdoor gathering. Toss in some logs, light the fire and hand out the marshmallows.
