October Newsletter

Fall has arrived! Whether its sports, cooler weather or watching the leaves turn…Fall is definitely a very popular time of the year and is welcomed by many. For us in the landscape installation and maintenance business, Fall is as busy as Spring and at times even busier. There are so many maintenance tasks at hand and the season-ending leaf drop looms around the corner.

Our Landscape Design/Build division is in full swing as we are completing and starting projects every day. If you are interested in recreating or designing a new space please contact our Landscape Architectural team. We have 6 landscape architects on staff that are ready to assist you.

Seasonal color installation starts this month! It’s time that we remove the summer annuals and replenish the beds with new soil and install our Fall annuals. Our Seasonal Color Designers are busy at work finishing Fall designs as our teams begin to start Seasonal Color Installations. If you need a design or add to your design please contact your Seasonal Color Designer or Team Manager.

Fescue aeration and overseeding are almost complete and we are eager to begin mowing the new replenished fescue turf. The waiting period to mow can be anywhere between 4-6 weeks before we can perform our first cuts. Our seed is hand selected from Oregon each year and is a blend of 3 fescue turf types that are rated for superior performance in our region. Fescue seed types are selected for color, drought tolerance, fungal resistance, and durability. Every year our seed is Blue Tag certified and guaranteed to be free of any weed seed by the Oregon State Growers Association.

Irrigation zones will be running this month quite often to keep the seed evenly moist to assure a good grow in of the new fescue seed. After the 1st to 2nd cut on the new fescue turf we will be able to ease off the irrigation. Seasonal Color Installations will require 2-3 weeks of watering and we can begin to winterize the irrigation systems in the next couple of months.

Bermuda and Zoysia turf will be losing color and going into dormancy this month. We will continue to treat for weeds and a big pre-emergent round is scheduled for next month. This is the time to treat the warm season lawns with a fungicide to prevent fungal outbreaks as the grass weakens and heads into dormancy. Our managers and teams are on the lookout and will alert you if we need to do a treatment. As the weather cools we are also paying close attention to Cryptomerias and scouting for Cercospora Needle Blight. This is a relatively new disease that we are seeing on Cryptomerias in the Spring and fall months. Fungicide sprays every 7-14 days through the cooler months can help prevent the spread of this blight.

Leaf season is close and crews are gathering leaves each week. First leaf abscission is from the large leaf trees; Tulip poplars, Red Oaks and Sycamore. Other trees will slowly drop as cooler weather sets in this month.

WiFi irrigation controllers are all the rage right now.  A client of ours was on Fall break at Disney World and had his lawn seeded while he was away. While in a line at Disney World he was able to change all the setting on his controller from his smartphone through the app and water his newly seeded lawn. If you don’t have a WiFi irrigation controller you should definitely give us a call. We can install quickly and you and your manager can control your controller anytime anywhere. There is also an in-app chat box that allows you and your manager can communicate about the irrigation anytime. Even better there is no need for the managers to access your garage.

Thank you so much for your allowing us the privilege to serve your landscape needs.

6 Reasons You Should Add an Arbor to Your Landscape

Rose Arbor

6 Reasons You Should Add an Arbor to Your Landscape

There’s something romantic and alluring about a garden landscape that includes an arbor. Add structure and style to your garden with a beautiful garden arbor.

Create Some Shade
Does your landscape get so much sun that you can’t sit outdoors to enjoy your yard in the heat of the summer? An arbor will create a space that is cool, comfortable and away from the sun.

Privacy Screen
Screen or disguise unwanted views (like boxy air conditioners and unattractive garden structures like sheds or compost bays), nosy neighbors and create more privacy.

Maximize Your Landscape
Adding an arbor can increase your garden vertically. When you train a rose or vine to climb the arbor towards the sun it creates shade below. You can install plants below the arbor that require less direct sun creating the opportunity for a diverse variety of garden plants.

Add A Focal Point
If you’re looking to redesign your landscape this spring, a custom arbor is the perfect place to start. Whether you want your arbor over a bench or seating area, or built as a gate into your yard, a custom arbor is the perfect center piece to a classic and stylish landscape design.

Create a Garden “Room”
Some vertical structures like arbors, arches, pergolas and gazebos help create the ambiance of an outdoor garden ‘room’ and can focus the eye on the mystery beyond.  They can also give a sense of height and depth to an otherwise small space.

Make A Place for Plants
The romantic image of a climbing rose draping off the roof of a wood arbor is iconic. Get this picturesque view right in your own back yard by planting a climbing rose or other favorite vine on your arbor. Come spring time, your custom arbor will be covered with your favorite blooms.

Before & After

These before and after photos show a backyard that was uninviting and completely unused by our client. We were able to design in a patio with a seat wall that provides aesthetics and extra seating when entertaining. The surrounding areas were also landscaped with plant material that inspires throughout the seasons.

Creating Your Best Garden

Creating Your Best Garden Landscape

Every garden is unique but the best gardens offer interest during every season. Through in-depth knowledge, experience and planning we find the right combinations of annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs, and bulbs that make our customer’s landscapes shine all year long.  Below is a list of a few of the herbaceous plants that thrive during summer and offer a long season of interest be it colorful foliage or brilliant blooms.

Duranta – Great for containers or in the ground, this unusual annual has beautiful airy clusters of blue, violet, or white flowers almost orchidlike in their beauty.
duranta

Gaura lindheimeri – Commonly known as Lindheimer’s beeblossom, white gaura, pink gaura, Lindheimer’s clockweed, and Indian feather.  This hardy clump-forming perennial is native to Texas and Louisiana. Once established it is drought tolerant.  Thriving in heat and humidity it grows 3 to 5’ tall and 1 to 2’ wide. At Gibbs, we pair it with lambs ears, duranta (above) and begonias.
gaura

Geranium ‘Rozanne’-  Commonly known as Cranesbill. Always a garden favorite for its excellent mounding habit and late spring to summer bloom time. It grows in full sun or part shade.

Geranium Rozanne

Ipomoea batatas ‘Margarita’- A chartreuse selection of the annual sweet potato vine. As a “spiller” it’s perfect for window boxes, hanging baskets and even your landscape borders. Place in full sun to part shade and watch it grow!

Ipomoea batatas ‘Margarita’

Kalimeris pinnitifida- Also known as the Double Japanese Aster, this perennial produces masses of  double, one-inch white flowers with buttery yellow centers for a very long time in  summer to early fall.  It grows 2 to 3’ tall and provides a great filler in the perennial or annual garden. Plant it in full sun or part shade.

Double Japanese Aster

Rudbeckia ‘Goldsturm’- Known to many as the iconic black-eyed susan. With bursts of showy yellow color this daisy-type perennial makes an ideal border plant as well as a beautiful cut flower.  Growing to 2’ tall and wide, it thrives in heat and sun.  It blooms prodigiously from late July to early October.

Landscaping Adds Value to Your Property

Landscaping Adds Value to Your Property

Landscaping can add tens of thousands of dollars to the value of your property. In fact, it is one of the few home improvements you can make that not only adds value immediately, but also increases in value as the years go by; while interior decor and design concepts regularly go out of style (remember avocado colored appliances?), plants grow fuller and more robust as the years go by.

Recent research by Alex X. Niemiera, a horticulturist at Virginia Tech, found that a well-landscaped home had a significant price advantage over a home with no landscaping. His research makes the distinction that there’s more to landscaping than randomly sticking some flowers and in the ground. The number-one thing that buyers are looking for in landscaping is a sophisticated design. Close behind is plant size and maturity, followed by the diversity of plant life within the landscaping design.

Mature Landscape

A well landscaped lawn can reap many benefits for a homeowner too. A beautiful front lawn can provide curb appeal, increasing the resale value of a home or building by up to 14%. And a well-executed landscape planting design’s appeal isn’t only aesthetic; it can actually cut heating and cooling bills by 20%. Maintaining your lawn and landscape can also greatly benefit your family in tangible ways, protecting them from allergens such as ragweed, and encouraging children to get outside to play rather than sitting inside in front of a computer.

The biggest landscaping mistake that homeowners make is not having a coherent plan. They decide to put a tree in, and then a few years later add some flower beds, then maybe put in some shrubs and another tree. A landscape that’s assembled piecemeal looks disorganized, and that turns buyers off. A landscape full of large, mature plants is obviously one that has been carefully tended to over the years, and that sends a signal to buyers that the interior must be as nice as the exterior.

Are you ready to increase the value of your property with landscaping?

Here are a few places to start:

Outdoor Living Spaces
People enjoy the sun and outdoors. A landscaped patio can raise the value of a home by as much as 12.4%. Anything you can do to incorporate the outdoors with the indoor comes as a buyer premium.
Water is a key feature in a backyard landscape but that does not mean a pool! A fountain, a small pond or a hot tub can do the trick. The key is to make the area a comfortable place to sit and relax.

Landscape Lighting
Show off your landscape day and night. Lighting the landscape can silhouette trees, light up the garden, keep visitors safe by lighting their path and provide security from potential burglars.
