Maintaining the winter landscape

During the cold winter months it is easy to think your exterior landscape needs little or no attention. However, the winter months are a critical time to protect your landscape and set it up for a sucessful spring. There are many very important services that need to be performed this time of year in order for your landscape to look great and be healthy come spring and summer.
Dormant pruning is a type of pruning done in the winter months. This type of pruning involves taking deep cuts within the canopy of the plant in order to let sunlight and air flow penetrate within the plant. This is a great way to control future incest and disease problems and is the best way to make sure your plant has the proper shape and form. Plants are generally tapered this time of year to make sure the widest part of the plant is at the bottom. This is a critical service that many times goes undone without the help of a landscape professional.
Tree canopy elevation is an important service that is usually done in the winter months. This type of pruning is most commonly done to keep lower limbs off sidewalks, drivways, and decks. Cross branches are also removed at this time to insure proper shape and form of landscape trees. The winter is a great time to make these types of cuts.
Dormant oil insecticide is one of the most important services done the entire year. This is because it smothers wintering insects and eggs which greatly reduce the populations in the spring and summer. The most important benifit however may be that this application causes not harm to the enviorment and is probably the most eco friendly way to control unwanted insects.
Tree and shrub fertilization is another very important service that is usually done in the winter. Even though plant material is dormant, applying a balanced slow realease fertilizer helps root systems through winter and sets up the plant to have a healthy spring and summer.
Pine straw and mulch applications are another important winter service that really helps the landscape in two ways. Firtst it will insulate roots through the cold winter and also from an asthetic standpoint make the landscape look great. Once leaves have fallen and been collected it is great to get your fresh mulch and pine straw applied.
